In a time when electric utility engineers are stretched as thin as the transmission and distribution lines they support, it is becoming more and more important to quickly and effectively determine the thermal ratings of existing as well as new overhead power lines.
That's where ThermCap comes in. ThermCap is a Windows-based application
that calculates steady state and transient thermal capacities
of overhead bare conductors under constant weather conditions.
The calculation methods used by ThermCap were developed by the
IEEE Working Group on Calculation of Bare Overhead Conductor Temperatures
of the Towers, Poles and Conductors Subcommittee. Those calculation
methods are outlined in IEEE 738-1993, and ThermCap is designed
to be consistent with the suggested practices within that IEEE
Standard.
ThermCap was designed with a number of timesaving features in mind, including lookup tables, file saving capabilities, as well as the ability to transfer results to other Windows-based software packages (spreadsheets, word processors, etc.), and comprehensive help files. These timesaving features serve to help utility engineers cope with the ever-increasing demands on their time.
ThermCap can perform four different thermal capacity calculations, which are easily selectable from the starting screen. ThermCap utilizes tab views for easy entry of conductor, weather and case-specific input data.
